Ford Escape Hybrid – Kelley Blue Book’s Review

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

While many other crossover SUVs are getting sleeker, more urban exteriors, the Ford Escape Hybrid has received a rugged redesign. The heightened beltline and sculpted hood remind us that the Escape Hybrid may offer great fuel economy, but first and foremost it is an SUV.

Ford’s design team takes its environmentally friendly vision even further by using 100-percent recycled seat materials, and Ford purports that, through a carbon off-set program, it has countered any greenhouse gases created by its production. Add to this SUV-like versatility, cargo room and four-wheel drive, and the Ford Escape Hybrid seems a natural choice for those who like to rough it without roughing-up the planet.

Toyota Camry Hybrid. The Toyota Camry Hybrid offers the same roomy interior and sterling reputation as the rest of the Camry line, but in a greener, more eco-friendly package. With fuel economy figures in the mid 30s, the Camry Hybrid is certainly easy on the gas, and can actually operate solely on electric power in stop and go traffic and low-speed around-town jaunts. Bigger than Toyotas other hybrid car, the Prius, the Camry Hybrid not only offers a wider passenger cabin, but also more power and the security of a trunk. With 10 years experience building hybrid cars, one might assume Toyota would have a lock on the market. But stiff competition is always present, and the Camry Hybrid must now do battle with some equally impressive nameplates such as the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid. Not to be confused with the company’s long-defunct Plymouth Voyager minivan, the forward-looking Chrysler ecoVoyager is a four-door, four-seat concept car powered by a plug-in lithium ion battery the automaker claims will deliver range of at least 40 miles on a full charge. For longer trips, a hydrogen fuel cell kicks in to charge the batteries, upping range to more than 300 miles. The entire propulsion system is located beneath the car’s floor, facilitating the car’s unique proportions. Interior highlights include an LCD display that allows the front passenger to watch a movie without distracting the driver.
