If your new Hybrid car doesnt have a carpool sticker…?

since CA reached the maximum and no longer gives the carpool sticker out, what if someone was to buy a new toyota prius and put fake stickers on their Hybrid. Is this something cops would even check on as they pass you or pull you over?

If so, is it the same violation as someone who isn’t riding with more than one and sneaks into the carpool lane without a hybrid?

You no longer need the sticker.

There are three violations that apply…

21655.5(b) CVC (driving improperly in HOV lane) – $350
21655.9(b) CVC (driving without HOV permit registration in hand) – $134
21655.9(c) CVC (display of a HOV permit not issued pursuant to CVC) – no bail amount listed, but it’s a misdemenor

Depending on the situation, a driver could be cited for any of these violations.

Whether or not an officer will pull you over for displaying false stickers depends on how thorough their knowledge of this law is (and how good your ‘fake’ stickers are). Officers have the ability to verify your stickers through DMV if they suspect something is up.

You might want to look for a used Prius which already has its stickers, since the law the allows Hybrids in th HOV lane expires in 2011 (only 4 years away)
