What is the most fuel-effiecient automobile in the world?
Wednesday, April 14th, 2010I live in the United States (but any calculation will do… either MPG or KPL).
I want to know the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the entire world to date that is available for purchase in the United States (so I could drive it, obviously). I’m not looking for concept cars or automobiles that need to be bought as far as India or something. I live in California… you get it.
Electric vehicles, Hybrid Vehicles, Diesel-powered Vehicles, and etc. are welcome.
Thank you, all. ![]()
I drive a fully electric Ford Ranger EV that I charge at home, and most of the electricity at my home is from my photovoltaic solar panels. The electricity that doesn’t come from them comes from my municipal electric company’s renewal energy program. It gets roughly 60 miles per charge — that’s 60 MPC
. Toyota RAV-4 EVs have a higher range, more like 100 MPC.
Outside of fully electric vehicles, there are a few groups that have recently developed plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (mostly using the Toyota Prius). These have additional batteries, and drive longer on battery power than standard HEVs like the Prius and plugged in to recharge like EVs. Their calculations show the PHEVs are getting 100+ MPG.
Here’s a great page from the US Dept of Energy where you can see fuel efficiency of cars running on a variety of fuels, including electricity, gasoline, diesel, CNG, and LPG:

It doesn’t list the Ford Ranger EV, but it’s still very informative.

Is the Toyota Prius Hybrid still the best choice.?
Monday, April 12th, 2010For practical purposes is the Toyota Prius Hybrid still the best automobile to consider purchasing?
I’m not picking on specific qualities but simply trying to get an overall idea as my wife and I who are retiring want to get an energy conserving and as environmentally friendly vehicle as we can and still stay reasonable for we do have a couple of Grandkids. The way-out rocket ship cars are out of the question here
) At our age we have to think in practical terms.
Thank You
I thank you all for you answering my question and have given everyone a thumbs up. I will choose a best answer later tonight.
A Swiss study just concluded that the Prius is the greenest car on the planet:

Plus it’s well-constructed and fun to drive. Best car on the road for sure!

Why not go with clean diesel fuel? It is the most viable available solution right now.?
Saturday, April 10th, 2010First of all let us get down to the corruption of all of this hoax created by Al Gore which is nothing but a scheme to put the public in fear. This will stop all of the money going out to create bogus programs. Next, let is realize that hybrid automobiles mpg results have been overinflated by the corrupt EPA. Since they have been caught, now they are doing real world tests. Now, let us look at what Europe is doing with automobiles. CLEAN DIESEL. These clean diesels consume far less fuel than gasoline motors of the same size. They are getting quieter, no longer smoke, and are as fast as gasoline cars in some cases. Mrs. Speaker, I challenge you to drive one of these cars and you will be surprised. However, I think the public should decide on whether Global Warming is true or not. I do not want you and a hand full of others control our lives when we vote you in there to work for us.
Let us first drop the politics, the global warming, and all the hype. Let us talk freedom. Diesel engines get way better fuel economy. I’m not "green" but I am "cheap" when it comes to my transportation and utility bills. I believe americans will never be free untill we can free ourselveles from the infrastructure that has been created to keep us under control. Plug-in electrics have already been developed and proven to be more than adequate for 90% of american drivers. Using diesel engines in cars is better than gas for many reasons…we will have a CHOICE on what type of fuel we want to use. A diesel engine will run on vegetable oil, biodiesel, used automatic transmission fluid, or any type of "bio-oil". The very first diesel engine was developed to run on pure peanut oil. There are so many anternatives. "They" just don’t want us to have that choice. The most viable choice for us right now are diesel engines, not to "save the earth" but to save us americans MONEY!!! I want to be free from that invisible force of people running my life and deciding on their next plot to rip off and control american consumers. I believe if we as a collective would demand more for our money we might actually get more. Hopefully our children will be smarter and less greedy than our generation was and still is. Right now I fight my war against the big oil companies by purchasing as little as possible from them. Very soon people will realize we never needed them in the first place!!!! I’m looking at a plug-in electric with a diesel generator range extender (much like the Chevy Volt but with a diesel engine). I’ll have to build this vehicle myself, but it will free me from the pump on a local level. I will be able to charge this car at home have a 200 mile range and with the range extender be able to travel up to 600+ miles on one fill-up. Gasoline engines are very inefficient. For every 100 units of fuel consumed you only get roughly 35 units of energy back. Sucks huh?!?! Electric motors are roughly 90% efficient…much better for my pocketbook!!!!! Electric motors do not need servicing like gas engines. Electric motors do not need air filters, oil, oil filters, spark plugs, or tune-ups. WOW!!! No mechanic bills either!!! Just educate yourself on the possbilities. You will be amazed at what is possible RIGHT NOW, not 20 years in the future. They are making us wait so we will buy the rest of the oil that is left to sell (trillions of dollars worth…I wonder who has something to gain from that?!) Be smart america!!! Educate yourself!!!!
What car to buy Civic, Civic hybrid or another?
Thursday, April 8th, 2010My brother is looking at 09 civic or 09 hybrid civic. Is there any other car that’s around that price (about $20,000). I think dealers are selling below MSRP.

Toyota Corolla is probably the easiest of the economy imports to work on and the most reliable. Civic’s, while still reliable, aren’t nearly as reliable as they used to be.
what type of science should i be studding?
Tuesday, April 6th, 2010I am interested in Automobiles, Engines, Hybrids, Aeronautics, Jet engines, ect… I am a very "green" person to add to that.
Mechanical and electrical engineering would probably be the way to go. The future of transportation is plug-in hybrids and electric cars, so you’ll be in good shape studying those subjects.
