Electric or Hybrid Car Batteries: Are they recycleable?

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

I read that batteries used or planned to be used in electric vehicles have problems on being recycleable. Is it true?

all batteries are recyclable. the metals are 100% recyclable, the plastic in the cases are ground up and mixed with new plastic and thus is recycled. the electrolyte solutions are reconstituted and reused. these days very little goes to waste when recycling batteries.

What is the most fuel-effiecient automobile in the world?

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

I live in the United States (but any calculation will do… either MPG or KPL).

I want to know the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the entire world to date that is available for purchase in the United States (so I could drive it, obviously). I’m not looking for concept cars or automobiles that need to be bought as far as India or something. I live in California… you get it.

Electric vehicles, Hybrid Vehicles, Diesel-powered Vehicles, and etc. are welcome. :-)

Thank you, all. :-D

I drive a fully electric Ford Ranger EV that I charge at home, and most of the electricity at my home is from my photovoltaic solar panels. The electricity that doesn’t come from them comes from my municipal electric company’s renewal energy program. It gets roughly 60 miles per charge — that’s 60 MPC ;) . Toyota RAV-4 EVs have a higher range, more like 100 MPC.

Outside of fully electric vehicles, there are a few groups that have recently developed plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (mostly using the Toyota Prius). These have additional batteries, and drive longer on battery power than standard HEVs like the Prius and plugged in to recharge like EVs. Their calculations show the PHEVs are getting 100+ MPG.

Here’s a great page from the US Dept of Energy where you can see fuel efficiency of cars running on a variety of fuels, including electricity, gasoline, diesel, CNG, and LPG:

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/byfuel/byfueltypeNF.shtml

It doesn’t list the Ford Ranger EV, but it’s still very informative. ;)

does anyone know if an electic hybrid car can get enough torque to be good for driving in the snow?

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

iam going to buy a car and i really wanted a hybrid but i heard they are no good during the winter because they don’t handle well in the snow. Does anyone have any experience?? tyty

It will run on the engine, instead of the battery. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Is the Toyota Prius Hybrid still the best choice.?

Monday, April 12th, 2010

For practical purposes is the Toyota Prius Hybrid still the best automobile to consider purchasing?
I’m not picking on specific qualities but simply trying to get an overall idea as my wife and I who are retiring want to get an energy conserving and as environmentally friendly vehicle as we can and still stay reasonable for we do have a couple of Grandkids. The way-out rocket ship cars are out of the question here :) ) At our age we have to think in practical terms.
Thank You
I thank you all for you answering my question and have given everyone a thumbs up. I will choose a best answer later tonight.

A Swiss study just concluded that the Prius is the greenest car on the planet:

Plus it’s well-constructed and fun to drive. Best car on the road for sure!
